前回では、日本人が不用意に使って相手の感情を損ねてしまいがちな単語や言い回しの代表的なものを、特に動詞や構文形に絞って紹介しました。今回は、主として動詞以外、特に形容詞や名詞を中心に、日本人にありがちな要注意事項をお話します。これらもほとんどは、単語自体に相手との上下関係や相手への目線の位置を内包しているものですが、一通りの学校英語を履修しただけでは気がつかないことがありますので、辞書や参考書をよく調べ、できれば実務経験の豊富な先輩やネイティブスピーカーに確認をとることが望まれます。ちなみに、これらのほとんどは、それが指している対象が「書いている/話している相手」(二人称)、相手が言ったり書いたりした言葉または相手が行った行為やその結果である場合に問題が起こりやすいです。一方、それ以外の場合(特に自分自身を対象にして使う場合)には相手の感情を害するということが少なくなる反面、必要以上に卑下したり、場合によってはあてつけ、皮肉や嫌味のニュアンスがでてきたりして気まずくなるということがあり得ます。

日本人にとって「私たち(我々)日本人は」という言い方に抵抗はないですが、外国人が “we Japanese” というフレーズを聞くと、「外国人と違って私たちは」という、選良(エリート)意識さらには外国人蔑視の現れと受け取られることが多く、良い感じはしませんので、気をつけましょう。”we” と “Japanese” を切り離して使えばそれほど気にされないでしょう。
